Residents of Chesokwo, a village in Mt Elgon forest, have discovered a suspected explosive in Mt Elgon.
A resident Patrick Wangala reported the incident at Chesikaki police station.
"This suspected explosive has caused panic," the residents said.
Bungoma police commander Francis Kooli said that he has dispatched a team of officers from Chesikaki to camp in the forest and cordon off the area throughout the night.
The police boss said they are still waiting for a team of experts from the Kenya Defence Forces department to assess the situation.
Kooli also asked the people of Mt Elgon to remain calm.
"It is important for residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities to the authorities," he said.
"The discovery of this explosive serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to strengthen police/community relationships on matters of security to enhance safety throughout the region."
