Nominated Senator Catherine Mumma has said there is need to invest in adolescents' healthcare.

She said the investment ought to be taken as an urgent intervention noting that failure to do so would be equivalent to killing the country's future.

Mumma was speaking on Monday during the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Maputo Protocol on the rights of women in Africa  held in Nairobi.

The senator said being mindful of the well-being of the younger generation secures the future of a country.

"We will secure the future of the women's movement by ensuring we secure the girl child," she said.

"We'll also secure gender equality by securing the boy child's future."

The legislator said that teenage pregnancy, for instance, was no longer a light issue but a crisis.

"Between 2016 and 2022, some 2.3 million adolescents aged 10-19 were pregnant in Kenya. That is not a small number, it's a crisis," she said.

In respect to technology, Mumma said the focus on sex education should shift from the usual question of what is right or wrong to addressing the changing technological trends.

"As we argue over comprehensive sex education, over what is good and what is bad, we have allowed our kids to access porn sites," she said.

"We need to therefore change the way we are working and recognise that there are fast changes that are coming with technology."

Mumma, on behalf of the Kenya Women parliamentarians and Kenya senators, assured full support to the Maputo Protocol and rights of women in Africa at large.
