One woman succumbed to bullet injuries she sustained during the Saba Saba protests in Kisii Town.
The family of 23-year-old Eunice Mutheu, a student at the Kisii Polytechnic is in mourning. She was allegedly shot by police.
The late Eunice passed on Saturday morning of complications from bullet injuries she sustained on Friday while helping out at the family's business in town.
Her friend Mary Ngui was in the same building as Eunice at the time of the protests.
“We were three people in the house and I heard a loud bang and thought it was a teargas canister hitting the window without knowing it was Mary who had been hit. Some bullets are stuck on the wall,” she said.
Her kin says she had come home from college for the weekend when she was caught in the crossfire, quite literally.
Police say the protesters had wanted to torch the police station before being repulsed hence the fatal shooting.
Kisii County Governor Simba Arati condemned the shooting, calling for thorough and expeditious investigations into the allegations of use of live ammunition by police during protests.
He wants those found culpable for any misconduct to be held accountable.
There were demonstrations in major towns in the country over the cost of living.
This has left four others nursing wounds in hospital following the protests that turned chaotic as police faced the protesters in various parts of the town.
Eunice's death increased to five, the number of people killed during the protests in the country.
The other deaths were reported in Kisumu and Migori counties.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority says they are investigating the shooting and many others that were reported.
And with another protest planned on Wednesday, there are plans from both local leaders and police on how to handle the situation.
Long-distance drivers and conductors will also be on strike if the directive by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on mandatory re-testing of drivers is not withdrawn.
Officials are calling for talks to avert the strike at large.
