Kalonzo, Karua visit victims of anti-state demos in hospital

The hospital's management earlier said 13 victims had been admitted to the facility.

Top Azimio leaders on Friday visited victims of Wednesday's alleged police brutality at Shalom Hospital in Machakos.

Later, Azimio leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua and Jeremiah Kioni also joined Governor Wavinya Ndeti to visit other victims at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

Kalonzo, Karua and Kioni arrived hours later after Ndeti checked on the victims earlier in the day.

The hospital's management earlier said 13 victims had been admitted to the facility.

All of them sustained injuries during the demonstrations that erupted in several counties.

Two of the victims are said to have succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the facility.

Two college students are said to be among the 13 admitted to the hospital.

Ndeti announced that she will clear medical bills for all the victims admitted to the facility.

She condemned the violence witnessed during the demonstrations stating that it shouldn't be tolerated in the country.

"Sadly, a woman who got married last Saturday died in Machakos town after she was squeezed between two matatus as she tried to run away from the chaos that rocked the town as police and residents engaged in running battles," Ndeti said.

She said her administration will also help the bereaved families with burial arrangements and expenses.

The hospital's medical superintendent Dr B.M Nzomo said all the victims admitted to the facility were in stable conditions, hence out of danger.

Several people were on Wednesday injured and hospitalised at various health facilities across the country following deadly protests that broke out.

Official records show that at least nine people were shot dead as police battled protesters during demonstrations called by Opposition Leader Raila Odinga.

Property worth millions was destroyed as demonstrations turned chaotic in many parts of the country.

On Thursday, Raila said the opposition will offer support to the victims of police brutality even as he vowed not to be intimidated.

On Friday, Raila declared that from next week protests will happen for three days from Wednesday to Friday.

The declaration signals another confrontation with security forces after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki banned all demonstrations n the country.
