In Summary

  • They said the former President should not be linked to the protests because their is no evidence.
  • The retired head of state, through his office, had on Sunday denied the claims.
Fires lit along the streets in Kisumu as demos begin on July 12, 2023.

A section of Azimio leaders have rubbished claims that Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is funding protests against the Kenya Kwanza government.

The politicians laughed off the claims saying that they are part of the Kenya Kwanza propaganda to discredit the demonstrations against President William Ruto.

Kathiani Member of Parliament Robert Mbui on Monday challenged Kenya Kwanza leaders propagating the claims to table proof that Uhuru is bankrolling the protests.

"How do you say that they are being financed, what are you paying for? There are no guns, vehicles, ammunition, so what is it that you are saying is being paid for unless you are saying that Uhuru is paying for stones and stones are littered all over the country," Mbui said.

Speaking on Citizen TV's Daybreak Show, the National Assembly deputy minority leader termed the claims as incitement.

He warned that the allegations could jeopardise the country's security.

"We need to put to rest the issue of Uhuru and his presidency because it's over but when you listen to the tone that the President has taken because you listen to the words he talked he said tutakusafirisha. What do you mean because there is a plan to safirisha Uhuru and Raila. What is the veiled message there? I am very worried," he said.

The office of the former President had on Sunday said they had no idea of any funding to the opposition and insisted that Kenyatta was focused on the DR Congo peace process.

Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina termed as pretty lame the claims that the retired President is financing demonstrations.

"Your narrative of President Uhuru sponsoring protests is pretty lame and a red herring. Stop maligning the conqueror," Ole Kina said in a Tweet on Monday.

"Focus on the issue at hand, lower the cost of living. That’s why Kenyans are rebelling.''

Belgut MP Nelson Koech alleged that Uhuru has been financing the protests against Ruto's government.

"He is financing, that is the matter we have said will be handed over to the investigative agencies. There is a lot of money that is going round from funding Mungiki to financing Azimio directly,'' he said.

The claims on Uhuru bankrolling the protests against Ruto's government come at a time when the opposition has announced an escalation of the demonstrations this week.

The opposition plans to hold demonstrations on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with Azimio Leader Raila Odinga expected to provide a road map on Monday.

Raila will on Monday meet all elected Azimio MPs at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation to plan the execution of the countrywide protests.
