Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has said it is shocking that the Azimio coalition decided to call off the anti-government protests.

Cheragei spoke on Monday night during an interview with KTN.

"It is shocking that the Azimio alliance has decided to suspend maandamano yet we wanted to finalise crushing political conmanship and intimidation in this country," Cheragei said.

The Senator said whenever demos happen in the country, it comes with hooliganism and criminality.

He added that one of the reasons Azimio called for the anti-government demos was to decry the Finance Bill 2023 which was approved in parliament.

The Senator defended the decision that was made in parliament to pass the Finance Bill 2023.

He said the power of legislation rests with parliament as stated in Article 93 of the constitution.

"Parliament can amend, repeal and make laws. The only thing that parliament cannot do is interpret laws. That is why we make laws that can be interpreted by the High Court," he said.

He said MPs have the right to push any piece of legislation within parliament.

The Azimio coalition called off the anticipated Wednesday demos saying Kenyans should instead hold a vigil for those who were killed during the past protests.

"Azimio has made the decision that on Wednesday, rather than go to the streets for a peaceful demonstration as earlier announced, we will hold solidarity parades and vigil for victims of police brutality in various locations in all parts of the country," the statement reads in part.

"We are calling Kenyans to come out and light candles and lay flowers in remembrance of and respect for the victims."
