Makueni speaker Mbilu released on Sh70,000 bail

Makueni Speaker Douglas Mbilu has been released on Sh70,000 cash bail or an alternative bond of Sh150,000.

He had been arrested on claims of organising anti-government riots in Emali town last week.

Mbilu denied the charges.

The speaker appeared before Magistrate Jackline Karani at the Makindu law courts. 

The case will be heard on August 8.

Kitui speaker Kelvin Katisya Kinengo and Makueni MCAs accompanied him to court.

Katisya is also Mbilu's Lawyer.

Reports indicate that two people have since died in Makueni since the demonstrations started and several others are nursing injuries. 

Leaders and the clergy in the region are calling for peaceful talks between the government and Azimio to save the country.
