Detectives are pursuing a gang that attacked and robbed a businessman in Busia of Sh1.2 million.

The gang also shot and injured a pedestrian as they escaped from a mob that was chasing them.

Police and witnesses said the gang escaped using an unofficial route.

Businessman Patel Pragneshh Kumar told police he closed his shop situated within Busia Township and headed to his home on July 23 at about 5 pm using his private car.

He sells assorted merchants in the town.

And on arrival at his house, he was confronted by two men, one armed with an AK47 rifle.

One ordered him to surrender the bag that was carrying the money, which was the day’s collection.

The gang grabbed the cash and jumped onto a waiting motorcycle before speeding off towards Burumba area, witnesses and the victim told police.

He raised an alarm alerting other motorcycle riders in the area who joined the hunt for the suspects pursuing them for a short while.

Their pursuit was however stopped by gunshots that rent the air.

This is after the gang shot at the mob at Mauko junction hitting a Burundi national who was in the group pursuing them.

He was shot in the right thigh as he walked on the road, police said.

The gang managed to escape towards Uganda, police and residents said.

The injured victim was rushed to Bulanda nursing home, where he was admitted in fair condition.

Police are liaising with their Ugandan counterparts to get the gang, which is still missing.

In the same area in Teso South, within Milimani in Angorom area, a gang shot at a group of bodaboda riders who were pursuing them.

No one was injured in the July 23 incident, police said.

A motorcyclist was carrying an armed pillion passenger from Busia area, who was carrying an unknown type of rifle in a cement sack when the drama broke out.

On reaching the Kenya-Uganda border, the armed pillion passenger fired towards the bodaboda riders who were pursuing them before they managed to cross into Uganda territory through the porous border.

Police are investigating the incidents.

A team of detectives handling the matters say the cases are connected to cross-border crimes and that they are working with Ugandan officials to address them.
