Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has taken over as the substantive leader of the former ruling Party of National Unity (PNU).

Munya's comeback now ends months of power struggles at the helm of the Late Mwai Kibaki's party.

Munya was the PNU party leader until 2020 when Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta named him into the Cabinet.

He had then lost the Meru governor position to Kiraitu Murungi after the 2017 polls.

The changes have now technically isolated a faction led by former Laikipia Governor Nderitu Muriithi, who was also eyeing the party leader post.

In a notice published in the dailies on Friday, the party also made several changes to its leadership including appointing a new Executive Director.

The party has, however, retained John Okemwa as the PNU secretary general.

In the radical changes signed by Okemwa, Nelson Omondi is the new PNU Executive Director, taking over from Joel Kinyua Imitila.

In the changes, Former Education Chief Administrative Secretary Zachariah Kinuthia has been installed as PNU's national organizing secretary.

Both Munya and Kinuthia are Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta's key allies from the Mt Kenya region.

Their installation at strategic positions in PNU lifts the lid on elaborate plans by the ex-president to get an alternative political machine amid leadership wrangles in his Jubilee party.

The new Deputy Secretary General is Ruth Nashipae who now takes over from Kevin Kariuki.

Alphonse Musyoki has been replaced by Yuda Imunyaas the party's national treasurer.

Wycliffe Bichang'a takes over from Abdikadir Sheikh as the party's new director of elections.

The new deputy director of elections is Caleb Mokaya who now substantively fills up the position that has been vacant.

Mwajuma Rajab will be the party's deputy national treasurer.

The position of deputy national organising secretary has been split into two and Alvin Kibet and Anastasia Munendo were named to the post.

Agnes Thoya takes over from Prisca Mwita as the party's women league chairperson.

She will be deputised by Beth Mengo who takes over from June Waweru.

The party also appointed secretaries for various sectors including Joseph Chege (Social), Ali Leyani (external affairs), Joseph Anampiu (chair board of trustees) and Moses Githinji (trade and tourism).
