Uber riders without bank accounts will now be paid for their trips using M-Pesa after a partnership with Safaricom.

Safaricom on Wednesday said they partnered with Uber Eats Kenya and the deal will see delivery guys paid through the mobile money platform.

"This partnership will see riders across Kenya pay for trips through M-PESA. This follows a collaboration with Uber Eats that allowed consumers to pay for deliveries through M-PESA and delivery people to also receive their earnings through M-PESA," safaricom said.

They said the move is to benefit drivers who lack bank accounts, with Uber’s data showing that about 20 per cent of drivers lack bank accounts.

They said that drivers can now enjoy the advantage of immediate payment availability.

This they said is to ensure accurate and timely payments for their services on the Uber platform.

The Head of Uber East Africa Imran Manji said the mode of payment will create convenience.
