Mount Kenya University is set to bestow an honorary doctorate upon Karim Khan, the lawyer of President William Ruto, during the university's 23rd graduation ceremony on August 4, 2023.
Khan was the lead lawyer when Ruto and Uhuru were taken to the Hague to answer on the case of the post-election violence of 2007/2008.
The announcement of the honorary doctorate for Karim Khan was made through a public notice released by the university.
The varsity through their website stated that the ceremony will be presided over by the University Chancellor John Struthers, who will award Diplomas and Certificates and confer Degrees.
The speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula will be the chief guest during the event.
The lawyer has been nominated for the Honorary Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa) in recognition of his significant contributions to the rule of law and international justice.
State House digital strategist Denis Itumbi also through his social media pages revealed the news to the public.
“Mount Kenya University to award ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree during their 23rd graduation ceremony,” Itumbi posted.
Notably, Karim Khan assumed the role of International Criminal Court Prosecutor in June 2021, succeeding Fatou Bensouda.
His legal prowess was evident when he represented President Ruto in the 2017 post-election violence case at The Hague.
Karim Khan has also served as an Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, holding the distinguished position of the first Special Adviser and Head of the United Nations Investigative Team
