University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama is set to proceed on a six-month leave after the Council approved his request.

In an internal memo, Director of Corporate Affairs John Orindi noted that Kiama requested a sabbatical leave until end of January 2024.

"This is to inform you that the Council of the University of Nairobi, during its special meeting on 31st July 2023, approved the Vice Chancellor's request dated 28th July 2023 to proceed on leave for a period of six months with effect from 1st August 2023," reads the memo.

However,  Orindi did not provide reasons as to why Kiama requested for the extended period out of his work station.

In his absence, the Council appointed Prof. Julius Ogeng'o to discharge the duties in the office of the Vice Chancellor in acting capacity effective August 1, 2023.

Ogeng'o is a professor of Human Anatomy and currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs.

He is also the Director for the Centre for Self-Sponsored Programmes at the University of Nairobi.

He is a seasoned lecturer and a medical doctor holding BSc, MBChB, PhD, MD and DSc degrees from the University of Nairobi.

Kiama took over as UON Vice Chancellor on January 5, 2020 to serve for a five-year term that is set to end in 2025.

He was previously the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Human Resource and Administration.
