Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir will have to reserve at least Sh900 million in tenders for local firms.
This is part of President William Ruto's performance target for Chirchir at the giant ministry to support locals' involvement in the energy sector.
"The cabinet secretary commits to ensuring that 40 per cent of the total procurement of goods and services is awarded to locals," reads Chirchir's performance contract in part.
The target for the current financial year has been placed at Sh943 billion, with the ministry expected to have achieved it by the end of the current financial year.
At the same time, the CS will be required to ensure that at least 30 per cent of the total procurement budget for goods and services is awarded to youth, women, and Persons with Disabilities as individuals or organised groups.
Of the 30 per cent, at least 2 per cent should be reserved for PWDS, according to the performance contract signed by Chirchir.
This will see youth, women, and persons with disabilities get Sh707 million worth of tenders in the current financial year.
An additional Sh14 million will go to persons living with disabilities.
Parliament is already pushing to expand the quota of procurement tenders that go to local firms.
Embakasi Central MP Mejjadonk Gathiru in February tabled amendments to the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal (Amendment) Bill, 2022 that seeks to reserve tenders worth Sh20 billion for local firms.
