Tenants of Lumumba Estate in Kisumu City have been given a three-month notice to vacate to allow the construction of modern and affordable housing units.

In a letter dated August 4, 2023, county director of housing Fredrick Onyango said the tenants are required to find alternative accommodation during the construction period.

The estate has been identified and earmarked for the construction of modern housing under the national government affordable housing project.

Onyango said the first phase will commence in this Financial Year 2023-4 with 480 housing units targeted for construction.

The county and national governments will engage the tenants to commence the relocation action plan and facilitation of the process.

“This is to inform you and also bring to your attention that we shall soon be calling for a meeting of tenants over the planned relocation,” Onyango said.

The housing project will be implemented under the county government of Kisumu and state department for housing and urban development.

“The government is in the process of doing urban renewal targeting our existing housing estates which are in a dilapidated state,” Onyango said.
