The Ministry of Health has begun to conduct a nationwide health facility census to determine the gaps which exist in the health sector.
The exercise which targets 15,000 health facilities both private and public seeks to find out the infrastructure in the facilities, the equipment and machines and the human resources available to run the facilities.
The two weeks exercise will run from August 14 to August 25 after which a report will be compiled.
Health DG Patrick Amoth on Monday said the data collected will inform the existing gaps and inform the next course of action as the country gears towards attainment of the Universal Health Coverage.
"We have put in place a robust data validation system so the data will stand the scrutiny of time," Amoth said.
Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha said the assessment will inform the ministry on what services are offered by the various hospitals.
This will help in the referral system as the country focuses on preventive and promotive health with Community Health Promoters being at the centre of service provision.
"We don't want when people are referred by the CHPs they find the facilities they have been referred to are not ready to offer the services they are looking for," Nakhumicha said.
"As an outcome, we will know which facility needs to be supported and at the end of the two weeks we will share the report publicly for people to know which facility offers what service."
