President William Ruto on Monday returned to his Eldoret farm to inspect the progress of his maize plantation.

This comes four months after the planting season.

Ruto who retreated to his residence on Sunday evening after his mission to Uganda was seen inspecting the plantation at his Koilel farm.

In a past event, the President said he intended to double the productivity of the farm so that he could contribute to food production.

He also challenged farmers to increase their efforts on the farm.

“We have a big debate in the country about the cost of living and how we need to reduce the cost of food but it boils down to what we do as farmers, so as a farmer I came down here to look at what I can do to make a contribution to food production in our country,” he said then.

Statehouse spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said farmers across the country were anticipating a bumper harvest during the current season which is set to peak in August and September.

“This success can be attributed to the unparalleled dedication of the country's farmers and the government's intervention through the fertilizer subsidy program, a commitment that President Ruto both promised and fulfilled,” he said.

When he took to power in September last year, Ruto scrapped the subsidy program and instead announced interventions aimed at increasing food productivity.

This saw fertilisers reduce from Sh7000 to Sh3500.

As a result of these efforts, an estimated yield of 44 million bags is expected from the long rainy season, compared to last year's 32 million bags.

“The price has been further reduced to Sh2500 since the President launched the 2nd phase of the fertilizer subsidy program on August 2, before the onset of the short rain season,” Hussein said.
