Tourism Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza has said the ministry is encouraging hotel owners to abolish per-person sharing in order to increase bookings.

Per person sharing is the price each guest pays when sharing a room.

Speaking in an interview with Capital FM, the CS said there is a practice in the country where if a couple goes on a vacation, the two of them are obliged to pay for the hotel room, in per person charges and not as a unit.

"We are pushing talks with hoteliers to open the space for rooms to be booked as a unit and not per person sharing. That way you open the space for rooms to be booked 100 percent every day," she said.

Malonzo added that it is not in order for business people to rely on certain clients who can fully afford the per-person charges, but depend on a larger group.

"We are navigating that route and I know it is not easy for business people who are used to booking room per person. You know when you go to a room, you also pay and your spouse also pays in the same room," she added.

The CS's message received mixed reactions as some agreed to it, suggesting that it should be regulated to a maximum of three people per room for the rates, while others disputed it saying the industry depends on the amount raised to maintain the business.

An X user by the name of David said if one is planning on going on a holiday and is worried about hotel charges, maybe they shouldn't go.

Fridah tweeted; "Per person sharing is a theft experienced only in Kenya. May CS Malonza make this a policy issue.

MJ said; "I support this. I've been saying this for years. Is Malonza here? I should clap for her for this. In some countries, there's no PPS. It's per room and then you have a policy of max 2 per room..this is common sense."
