National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah has said Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba should be summoned for allegedly neglecting athletes.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, the Kikuyu MP said Ababu should provide an explanation as to why neither he nor a representative from the ministry was present to receive athletes who landed after representing Kenya at the Berlin Games.

"You were not made a minister in this country to fly flags in the streets and bulldoze your way through traffic with Subaru escorts, you were made to serve the sportsmen and women of this country," he said.

"The minister must appear before this house and I will cause his appearance and specifically tell this house and the people of Kenya why he lacks the time to attend to people who are representing our country," he added.

Ichung'wah noted that it is sad that athletes came into the country and were not recognised as they deserve.

"They go represent our country out there, win and come back yet no one from the ministry or the minister himself received them at the airport, and even recognise them and appreciate the good job they have done for our country," he said.

The MP said it is not fair that the ambassadors of this country don't receive the best recognition they deserve.

"On behalf of the government of Kenya, I would like to apologise to the best ambassadors who represent us, they win medals for us, they do a good job and represent us. We shall take the minister to account," he said.
