Kenya Power has announced it is working on having Uganda's interconnector restored to enhance power recovery efforts around the country.

Through a statement, the company said it had to turn to electricity from Seven Fork Hydro power stations to kick start the restoration exercise as they waited on Uganda.

The company said electricity from Seven Fork takes a longer period as compared to electricity imported from Uganda (UETCL), which is faster but was unavailable at the time.

"We are jointly working on having the Uganda interconnector restored so as to enhance our grid recovery efforts," the company said.

"Most of the grid was sequentially restored from Central and Eastern Regions where the hydro generation is located and towards Nairobi."

It said it is also working on electricity restoration in parts of Nairobi, Coast, Western, Central Rift, North Rift and South Nyanza that are still off supply.

"We are in the final stages of onboarding power from the Olkaria complex where most of the geothermal plants are located," part of the statement read.

Kenya Power said the System Demand at the time of the outage was 1855.8 MW.

This led to a loss of approximately 15 percent of generation that was expected to cause a widespread power outage.

"By 1145 hrs today most of the transmission grid had been energized and normal power supply to customers restored as generation came on board," Kenya power said.

"We shall continue to update as we finalise the restoration efforts. We apologise to our esteemed customers for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience."

On Friday night, the country was plunged into darkness following a massive power outage that affected most parts of the country including Nairobi, Central, Rift Valley and Western regions.
