President William Ruto has warned the opposition against returning the country to street protests.

The head of state said all leaders must instead focus on developing the country.

Speaking in Busia on Saturday, the president said street protests are not the solution to the challenges facing Kenyans.

''I have heard some people talking about protests again, who told you that the only solution is on protests?'' Ruto posed.

''On street protests and burning roads, destroying businesses and public property, let us forget that.”

Opposition leader Raila Odinga's Azimio coalition has been warning of a return to street protests if the on going bipartisan talks do not bear fruits.

They had called off demonstrations to give way for dialogue following interventions from both local and foreign players.

On Saturday, Ruto took a swipe at the opposition for opposing the Finance Act,2023, yet it was seeking to empower local manufacturing by banning imports of locally available goods.

The opposition had moved to court to challenge taxation measures in the Act but the Court of Appeal lifted an initial order by the High that stopped its implementation.

The hearing of the case is ongoing.

''We are going to levy taxes on those products that we can make locally but there are people notorious of importing them,'' Ruto said terming this an opportunity to create jobs.

The president asked all political leaders to work together and join hands with his government in solving problems of unemployment among the youth.

''I want us to work together, avoid chaos and build our country,'' Ruto said.

''These young people are looking upon us on how we are going to expand opportunities for them so that they can make a contribution in growing our economy.''
