National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi has criticised Kenya Power over the outage that has rocked the country since Friday evening.

Wandayi on Saturday said the frequent power blackouts being experienced in the country expose what he termed as ‘incompetence’ on the part of KPLC.

He further noted that this not only compromises on the national security but also affects economic muscle of the country.

“Kenyans are currently paying the highest tariffs ever for electricity consumption, including being charged for power they have not consumed,” he said.

“Frequent nationwide power outages not only exposes KPLC incompetence, but also compromises national security while denting economic production."

The blackout has led to uproar from Kenyans who had to endure the night in darkness.

The power outage that hit the country on Friday evening has affected most parts of the country including the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport(JKIA).

Even though power had been restored at the airport and other parts of the Nairobi Metropolitan area, most parts are still in darkness.

Business owners in the country continue to bear the brunt of the nationwide power blackout.

As a result, businesses that rely on electricity to run their activities have continued to count losses.

“It is a scandal which requires heads to roll but more importantly there is need to establish what is happening at KPLC which continues to enjoy a long monopoly but does not give value for tax payers money,” Manyora said.

Passengers at JKIA were stranded in darkness for at least two hours on Friday night.

Regions  including Nairobi, Rift Valley, Mt Kenya and Western Kenya were also affected by the power outage.
