A House committee and a parliamentary caucus have expressed interest in convening a side event at the ongoing Africa Climate Summit at the KICC, Nairobi.

The Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining, and the Parliamentary Caucus on Conservation and Climate Change said the event aims to emphasise the need to build resilience to climate risk in Africa.

“By bringing together policymakers, climate experts, community leaders and stakeholders, we aim to foster discussions on innovative strategies that will build climate resilience and protect vulnerable communities from the impacts of climate change,” read a joint statement.

The committee and the caucus said talks will centre around the importance of integrating climate risk considerations into national and regional policies and planning frameworks.

The two further said talks will seek to foster collaborations between governments, civil society, the private sector, and international organisations to strengthen the collective efforts for climate resilience in Africa.

They added that the event will also recognise the critical role of local communities in climate resilience.

“The Committee and the Caucus will seek to explore ways to empower and support them in developing context-specific adaptation strategies,” the statement said.

The two pledged to acknowledge the unique perspectives of youth and women in climate adaptation and advocate for their meaningful participation in climate decision-making processes.

The targeted audience includes government officials and policymakers from African countries, representatives from civil society organisations and community-based groups, climate researchers and experts, private sector leaders and investors interested in climate resilience initiatives and youth activists and women leaders advocating for climate action.

Expected outcomes of the side event include policy recommendations for integrating climate resilience into national and regional policies and legislative frameworks and strengthened partnerships and collaborations among stakeholders for collective climate action.

Other outcomes are increased awareness and understanding of climate risk and adaptation opportunities in Africa and identification of innovative adaptation strategies and best practices for replication and scaling up.
