Former Director of the Kenya Anti-corruption Commission Patrick Loch Lumumba reiterates that constitutional revamp is needed especially in this era of political situations.

Speaking on Spice FM on Friday, Lumumba stated that there have been various attempts by the politicians to amend the constitution although their plans were short term based in terms of the intentions.

“We are no longer going to agonise but to organise, we are going to draft a bill that addresses some of the things we think need attention and come to the people to seek their support,” Lumumba said.

This year, Kenya marked the 13th anniversary of the 2010 Constitution’s promulgation on August 27, 2023.

Lumumba stated that various positions currently have no constitutional basis and a review of the constitution would help figure out a lot.

“There is a constitutional moment because immediately after the 2022 elections once again we found ourselves in an environment where the losers having exhausted the prescribed avenues chose to act extra constitutionally,” Lumumba said.

Lumumba also claimed that even the ongoing dialogue talks might end up emerging with a proposal of constitutional amendment to resolve short term political interest thus insisting long term amendment of the constitution has to be core.

On August 27, the constitutional lawyer led a lobby advocating for areas such as the arrangement of the executive, framework of devolution, independent commissions and offices addressed in the constitutional revamp proposal.
