Fire tragedy claims one-year-old toddler in Githunguri, Kiambu

A one-and-a-half-year-old child was killed in a fire incident in Githunguri, Kiambu County.

The female minor was in their house with her elder sister aged four when the fire broke out on Monday night in Kamakwa village in Kanjai sublocation.

Police said the fire raged through the four-roomed timber-made structure killing the child as her sister ran out to safety.

The children’s parents were not at home at the time of the incident and arrived to find the tragedy.

Police said they are yet to establish the cause of the fire. The remains were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and probe.

Meanwhile, police in Kingeero, Kabete are investigating the discovery of an abandoned baby on the riverbed.

A passerby told police he heard the cries of a baby and on checking he found the newborn in a woven bag with no clothes and with a fresh cut umbilical cord.

There were bloodstains at the scene where the baby girl was found.

The passerby called for help and rushed the baby to Wangige hospital where officials said she was in good condition.

 The first immunisation vaccines were administered to the baby before she was admitted to Makimel Children's Home, officials said of the Tuesday incident.

Police say the mother of the child is yet to be known and efforts to trace her are ongoing.
