Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday left the audience in stitches after saying the government had traced to origin of Colombian Vice President Francia Marquez to Kenya.

Gachagua is attending a high-level Kenya-Colombia Business Forum meeting at the Chamber of Commerce Office in Bogota.

The DP who is in Colombia had taken to the podium to address the audience when he said Marquez had originated from Meru as per the extensive research done by President William Ruto.

He said the curiosity of President Ruto to trace the true origin of Marquez began when she came to Kenya during her recent visit.

"It was during the visit that it emerged that her looks, way of walking and behaviour blended with that of Kenyans," he said.

“It is good for me to inform the people of Colombia that when your Vice President visited Kenya…..and Kenya being the origin of man our President William Ruto sought to find out her origin.

“I am happy to report to you that after extensive research we have confirmed that your Vice President originated from Kenya, and not just in Kenya we have traced her roots in a place called Meru.

“Our president has given her a Kenyan name Nyawira which means a hardworking girl. We welcome her to Kenya again to meet her relatives and get to know them better.”

Marquez was in the country in May where he met Gachagua and held talks in a bid to open up the two countries to a two-way business and investment cooperation.

The DP said talks were underway to explore the possibility of direct flights.
