MPs have reprimanded the chairperson of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Board Anthony Munyiri for allegedly snubbing a committee meeting to attend a wedding.

While appearing before the Social Protection Committee of the National Assembly, Munyiri, who was accompanied by NSSF managing trustee David Koros, apologised to MPs and pleaded for lenience.

Munyiri was responding to a question on why the entire Board of Management did not appear before the Alice Ng’ang’a-led committee as invited earlier.

"Chair, four board members requested for an apology, one was unwell and a few others are outside the country. I personally had social engagements that stopped me from honouring the invites. Chair, going forward I promise to take it upon myself to ensure all board members attend meetings,” Munyiri said.

Rangwe MP Lilian Gogo called for stern action against NSSF management for repeatedly ignoring invitation letters from the committee.

"We cannot have a situation where people handling large amounts of money in terms of social security show high levels of incompetency in administration and management," Gogo said.

"We called you repeatedly, you disappeared then told us you were in a wedding. Next time we meet, we need a full board."

Koros assured the committee that he has a competent team working at the Fund.

"I request the committee to give us another date to be able to respond in detail to issues raised on management and staffing. Mistakes happen chair, we apologise and going forward we will work together smoothly,” Koros pleaded.

The committee announced it will hold more sittings to air out issues of concern with NSSF management.
