Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has warned President William Ruto that some of his radical economic policies could hurt him politically.

The political scientist, who is famed for his tyranny of numbers mantra of 2013, warned that such far-reaching decisions could erode his goodwill among Kenyans.

Reacting to the hike in fuel prices that went past the Sh200 mark, Ngunyi said that some of Ruto's tough decisions to fix the economy may deflate his support.

''Dear Ruto: Your economics is bad for politics,'' Ngunyi wrote on his X account, formerly Twitter.

Ngunyi, who served as Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta's technical advisor, wondered how the government would hike fuel prices sharply as that would hurt the poor.

''How does EPRA(Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority) increase Kerosene prices by 33%? and Diesel by 20%? The poor use Kerosene to cook and Matatus use Diesel to move,'' Ngunyi said.

According to the political scientist, who recently declared that he will be supporting President Ruto's administration, the high prices will negatively affect the poor.

''The poor are hurting and all headlines this week are about more taxes. Do not lose the plot my Fren(sic),''  he said.

For the first time in history, the prices of fuel rose by as high as Sh20 per litre with the big jump expected to have far-reaching consequences for households.

In the review, the price of petrol is up by almost Sh17 per litre while that of diesel has increased by about Sh21.32 per litre.

"The maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Nairobi are as follows: Super Petrol increases by Sh16.96, Diesel increases by Sh21.32 per litre and Kerosene increases by Sh33.13 per litre," Epra announced on Thursday.
