Kwale police are investigating the death of a 23-year-old man who was allegedly killed by GSU officers.

The 23-year-old met his death after being given an alleged corporal punishment that lasted for hours.

The incident occurred at Sirirani village in Kazamoyo within the Samburu subcounty.

According to the area assistant Chief Jackson Karisa Chengo, the deceased Nyae Ngala Chamtu succumbed to multiple body injuries.

Chengo said the GSU officers are reported to have raided the village and taken Chamtu from their home before attacking him.

The incident took place on Saturday at around 9:00 am.

"They fetched him from their home while taking breakfast and frog-marched him to a nearby makeshift camp," he said.

Chengo said the deceased was later heard screaming in pain forcing some of the relatives to rush to the camp.

He said while reaching the scene, the relatives found the officers still beating Chamtu who was almost lying unconscious.

Chengo said, according to the villagers the GSU officers randomly kicked and whipped Chamtu as he tried to stand.

The local administrator said the officers later left him after his mother and some of the relatives surrendered.

"His mum and sisters could bear the torture and had to kneel and put their hands up asking for forgiveness,'' he said.

Chengo said the family took Chamtu back home but he was heavily bleeding through the nose and mouth.

He said the lower body part had swollen heavily and contained several body cuts from the head to the legs.

Chengo said the deceased ribs were also badly hurt since he couldn't breathe properly.

He said the family couldn't take the deceased to the hospital on time because the GSU officers barricaded the roads and launched a curfew.

The assistant chief said the men in uniform didn't allow anyone to make a phone call, or move in or out a situation that contributed to the death of the deceased.

Chengo said they were able to take Chamtu to Silaloni Hospital at around 1:00 p.m., five hours later after the incident.

Chamtu, however, breathed his last on the way to hospital.

Samburu subcounty Police Commander Fredrick Ombaka sympathised with the bereaved family adding investigations have commenced.

He said the DCI has taken up the issue and has started investigating.

Ombaka urged the locals to observe peace until justice is served.

County Police Commander Stephen Ngetich promised the residents to get justice.

He said no one is above the law and if the officers are found culpable, necessary disciplinary action shall be taken against them.

"Investigations are ongoing, IPOA is also on the case and if the officers are guilty, the law will take course," he said.

He urged the locals to stay calm and come forward to give information that might help with the investigations.

Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo linked the incident with the ongoing protracted land dispute between residents and a private developer.

He strongly condemned the act citing it as inhuman and uncalled for.

Kombo said the GSU officers responsible should be brought to book and pay for their actions.
