Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was on Sunday night released by his suspected kidnappers after 24 hours.

Njenga was dumped in Limuru, Kiambu County at about 10.15 pm and offered fare home.

He then hopped onto a motorbike to his Banana home where he had been picked up by his alleged abductors on Saturday night.

It was after he arrived home that he called his lawyers and relatives to tell them of the release.

His lawyer Ndegwa Njiru confirmed the release and accused the police of being behind the kidnapping.

“Client Maina Njenga was finally released by the rogue police hit squad after our press conference,” he said.

His brother Njoroge Kamunya also confirmed Njenga the released.

“We will meet in court for the case that we have. He is okay for now though traumatised,” he said.

His abduction happened in Banana area, Kiambu on Saturday night, the motive of the incident is yet to be disclosed.

Njenga is expected in Makadara court on Monday for a pre-trial of his case.

The police are yet to comment on the issue. Kiambu police boss Perminus Kioi did not respond to our calls.

It is not the first time such drama has happened to him.

In May he was also arrested from his father’s home in Kiserian and detained for days before being arraigned.

Njenga was later released on a Sh200,000 bond after he was charged for allegedly playing a huge role in planning anti-government demonstrations.

In May this year, Njenga made headlines when police raided his three homes in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Laikipia counties. This followed claims they recovered weapons from the Nakuru home.

The recovery was made on May 12 when the police raided Njenga’s home in Ngomongo village in Bahati, Nakuru.

His family says the drama surrounding Njenga is political over politics in Central Kenya.
