The Star Kenya's features editor Tom Jalio has been selected for the prestigious KEG-Chinese Embassy editorial fellowship.
The inaugural fellowship was launched in September 2023 in partnership with the Chinese Embassy in Kenya.
The Kenya Editors Guild said Jalio was selected from a pool of 16 applicants from its members.
"The fellow will travel to China for two weeks and will file reports on Sino-Kenyan cooperation," KEG said in a statement.
The fellowship will entail attending field trips to other destinations other than Beijing, and visits to Chinese Media houses and companies.
"Fellows will also attend seminars and select Chinese Political events."
Jalio says he is grateful to the KEG for the selection and equally surprised after the selection as he has always looked forward to going to China.
"I'm used to seeing roads being made by China in Kenya but never imagined I would one day go there. There are many worthy candidates, so I do not take it for granted," he said.
"I'm also grateful to Radio Africa Group head of content Paul Ilado for the clearance when I was applying. I will endeavour to do justice to the opportunity."
The editor also noted that he expects some peer learning with Chinese media, immersion into Chinese culture, economic insights on the Belt and Road Initiative, and a better understanding of the Chinese perspective on world affairs.
"I appreciate that the country is a manufacturing giant so after a lifetime of buying things 'Made in China', it would be interesting to go to the source, and see what makes them tick."
Being his first time visiting China, Jalio looks forward to getting to see the Wonder of the World it is known for: the Great Wall of China.
"I remember spending a whole day at Nyayo House in 2019, trying to get my passport renewed with hopes of travel. It's been a long time coming but this is worth the wait."
Jalio will be in China for two weeks.
