Gachagua to attend funeral of late freedom fighter Muthoni

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is among the top leaders expected to attend the funeral of the late freedom fighter Field Marshal Muthoni wa Kirima who will today be laid to rest at her Tetu home in Nyeri.

Muthoni, who served as the late freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi's personal assistant in the struggle for liberation, passed on September 5 aged 92.

She was pronounced dead at a hospital in Pangani where she was rushed moments after developing health complications.

While announcing about her demise, Gachagua remembered her as a hero who led the Agikuyu community in their fight for freedom.

"I have woken up to sad news of the passing on of Field Marshall Muthoni Kirima, the gallant freedom fighter who fought side by side with Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri in the Mt. Kenya and Aberdare forests to drive colonialists from our land," Gachagua said.

He added: “We recall with pride and sheer admiration, her exploits in leading the land and freedom army after the capture of freedom hero Dedan Kimathi whom she served as his personal assistant, after he was betrayed by Collaborators."

Kenya, he said, remains indebted to these great heroes and heroines for the sacrifice to liberate our land.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga who is among those who have been leading the burial arrangements said a requiem mass will be held at Kinunga Stadium before she is finally moved to her final resting place at at Ihwa village.

Her remains Kahiga said have been lying at the Lee funeral home.

It was still not clear if Opposition leader Raila Odinga would attend the ceremony.
