Ruto re-appoints ex-Senate speaker Ekwee Ethuro as HELB chairperson

He has been appointed for a five-year period.

President William Ruto has reappointed former Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro as the Chairperson of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

In a gazette notice on Friday, it stated that Ethuro has been re-appointed for a five-year period.

Ethuro's re-appointment was effective from September 19, 2023.

"President of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces William Ruto re-appoints Ekwee Ethuro to be the Chairperson of the Higher Education Loans Board, for a period of five years, with effect from the September 19, 2023," the gazette notice read in part.

Ethuro was previously appointed to the role by Former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2018 after he ceased being a speaker in 2017.

He was the first Senate speaker under the 2010 Constitution.

He served as the Senate Speaker between 2013 and 2017 after being elected unanimously by the Jubilee coalition.

Ethuro was a member of The United Republican Party (URP)which merged with The National Alliance (TNA)to form the Jubilee Alliance. 

As the new chairperson, Ethuro will ensure HELB is able to provide affordable and accessible financing to students pursuing higher education.
