Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has said that he exploring legislative interventions to make his proposal to extend the presidential term limit a reality.

Cherargei had proposed a 7-year two-term presidential limit from the current two terms of 5 years.

“Increase the presidential term to seven years: Whereas the current Constitution provides for a two-term presidential term limit comprising ten years there is a need to increase the same to two terms of seven years each, ” Cherargei said.

In a statement on his social media handles on Tuesday, the senator said that since the National Dialogue Committee did not give him a chance to submit his proposal he will explore other avenues to defend his bid.

"I am exploring the option of legislative intervention in our proposals through the Parliamentary process,” Cherargei said.

Cherargei accused the committee of refusing to allow him to appear before them.

"Out of fear and parochial political interests the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) has refused my appearance before them for my earthquake presentation, ”he said.

Cherargei termed NADCO's action as pure discrimination and hypocrisy against the constitution despite many Kenyans and stakeholders appearing before it.

The Nandi senator insists that his idea is of goodwill to the country and ought to have been considered.

Members of the public and other stakeholders from different sectors have been appearing before the dialogue committee with proposals touching on various issues.

Cherargei on Monday said that the National Dialogue Committee did not accord him time to make an oral presentation on his proposal.

He accused them of denying him a chance to defend his proposal since he felt the issues he raised in his proposal were worth being put into consideration like any other issues.

The senator defended the proposal, explaining that there is a need to give the President ample time to form and establish a formidable team to deliver on his or her manifesto.

"Besides, the Kenyan presidential election is always highly profiled as a result of it being conducted within a short period of time, thus making it a do-or-die adventure," Cherargei argued.

Despite this, the president's party, the United Democratic Alliance, strongly disagreed with the proposal and distanced itself from the Senator's "opinion".

UDA through the party's secretary general Cleophas Malala distanced from Cherargei's proposal.

The NADCO is set to conclude the public view phase today as they look into issues that have been brought to their attention.
