Minor playing with dad’s rifle shoots, injures brother in Turkana

He was playing with the weapon when it discharged a bullet

A 12-year-old boy is admitted to hospital with a serious bullet wound after he was accidentally shot by his brother in a village in Kibish, Turkana county.

His brother, aged 13, had picked his father’s AK47 rifle from their house in Nareng village and started to play with it. The gun discharged a bullet hitting his 12-year-old brother in the abdomen.

The father is a National Police Reservist operating in the area.

The father said he left the weapon with the minor who then started playing with it and in the process, he accidentally shot his brother.

The victim was rushed to Kibish dispensary in critical condition following the October 7 incident.

Security officers visited the scene and recovered the firearm with one bullet of 7.62mm special.

The child who allegedly shot his brother and the NPR officer to whom the firearm had been issued went missing and could not be immediately traced.

Police said they are investigating the incident.

Such incidents are common in the area. Most juveniles are trained on how to handle the weapons.

Meanwhile, a man was stabbed to death on Monday in Mau Narok, Njoro constituency, Nakuru county. 

Residents said they found the body by the roadside on Tuesday morning. 

The motive of the attack is yet to be known.

Police said the victim had suffered multiple stab wounds, leading to speculation that he might have been a victim of a mugging or a gang-related attack.

And a 25-year-old man was found dead in their house in Lavington, Nairobi.

Police and the family of Benard Kibaso said his body was found on October 8 long after he had died.

The cause of the death has not been established.

Kebaso is a former architectural science graduate from Machakos University. He was working as an intern at a local insurance firm.

He is said to have retired to bed on October 7 but failed to wake up the following day. He had earlier complained of stomachache.

His mother, Rosemary, told police she found him lying dead on his bed.

An autopsy is planned on the body to establish the cause of death.
