Former United States President Barrack Obama has said all Americans should be horrified and outraged by the brazen terrorist attacks on Israel.

Through his X platform on Wednesday, Obama said people should be worried about the slaughter of innocent civilians.

"We grieve for those who died, pray for the safe return of those who’ve been held hostage, and stand squarely alongside our ally, Israel, as it dismantles Hamas," he said.

He however said that as people support Israel's right to defend itself against terror, we must keep striving for a just and lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians alike.

The US on October 9 said it is moving an aircraft carrier, ships and jets to the eastern Mediterranean and will also give Israel additional equipment and ammunition.

It follows the Hamas attack on southern Israel, which President Biden called an "unprecedented and appalling assault".

A US National Security spokesperson said several US citizens were among the dead.

The ongoing war between Israeli forces and Hamas has already left over 1, 000 people dead and thousands of others wounded on both sides.

The exact reason as to the cause of the fights remains unclear but reports indicate that there has been a constant tension between Israel and Hamas especially in the West Bank.

West Bank is a landlocked territory near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the Levant region of Western Asia that forms the bulk of the Palestinian territories.

It is bordered by Jordan and the Dead Sea to the east and by Israel to the south, west, and north.

In recent weeks, some Jews have prayed inside the compound of al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Hamas on Tuesday fired rockets on the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon after warning people to leave by 17:00 local time (15:00 BST).

Air raid sirens have been sounding across Israel throughout the day the military says more than 4,500 rockets have been fired since Saturday.

Israel says it's killed two top Hamas officials while continuing to bomb the Gaza Strip; the group itself has not confirmed this.

A BBC reporter in Gaza said it was the worst bombing he had seen in 20 years, with neighborhoods flattened.
