Kenya, UK to leverage ties to accelerate climate action – CS Tuya

The CS said Wigan also briefed her on the forthcoming visit of the King Charles III.

Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has met United Kingdom's new High Commissioner to Kenya Neil Wigan.

Tuya said during their meeting on Monday, they discussed Kenya's climate action priorities covering the implementation of the outcomes of the Africa Climate Summit in climate finance.

"Kenya and the United Kingdom (UK) will leverage their strong historical bilateral ties to accelerate climate action in the country including the flagship of 15 billion national tree growing and ecosystem restoration programme," she said.

The government seeks to achieve the 10.6 million hectares target through the 15 Billion Trees initiative.

Their goal is also to achieve 30 per cent forest cover for Kenya by 2032 for biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience and social-economic development

The CS said Wigan also briefed her on the forthcoming visit of King Charles III.

"H.E Wigan briefed me on the forthcoming visit by His Majesty King Charles III scheduled for October 31 to November 3, the first of such visits to a Commonwealth country since the King's ascension in September 2022," Tuya said.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will visit Kenya for an official visit. 

This will be Charles's first official visit to Kenya since he was crowned King in May 2023.

It is also a historical visit as this is the country in which his mother was announced Queen Elizabeth II, having acceded to the throne in Kenya in February 1952.

During their visit, the King and Queen will meet President William Ruto and First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, as well as other members of government, UN staff, CEOs, faith leaders, young people, future leaders, and Kenyan Marines training with UK Royal Marines. 

The two leaders are also scheduled to visit Nairobi City County, Mombasa County and surrounding areas. 

On the other hand, former UK ambassador to Israel Neil Wigan arrived in Kenya to assume his new role on August 16.
