Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has said her ministry is welcoming more donations of seedlings.

Tuya called on direct participation from partners and Kenyans in tree-growing activities to accelerate the push towards the 15 billion trees target.

Through her X platform on Monday, Tuya said during these short rains, they are mobilising seedlings from partners and private sectors.

This, she said, will enable the country to meet the target of growing 500 Million trees by the end of December.

The CS also said she received seedling donations which spearheads the pathway to meeting the target.

"I am delighted to have received a donation of 450,000 seedlings from Standard Chartered Bank and the Nairobi Arboretum Community Forest Association (CFA) for the greening of Nairobi City's green spaces and infrastructure wayleaves," the CS said

She further said the partnership has committed to donate one million seedlings going forward.

The government has been focusing on meeting its target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

They seek to achieve the 10.6 million hectares target through the 15 Billion Trees initiative.

Their goal is also to achieve 30 per cent forest cover for Kenya by 2032 for biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience and social-economic development.

Their approach to Forest and landscape restoration has been targeting many; partners, organisations and even non-state actors.

A forest and landscape restoration forum was last week held by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry in partnership with other stakeholders like the World Bank and World Wild Fund.

During the forum, Environment, Climate Change and Forestry PS Festus Ng'eno said the role of government in the conservation, restoration and management of environment and forest ecosystems is to coordinate natural resource protection.

He said they do that by enhancing the production of tree seedlings and establishing synergies for restoration through partnerships.

The PS also said the government ensures legal and policy framework is reviewed in progressive ways.

"We want to break the silos and consider, contemplate, plan and strategize on how in this UN decade of ecosystem restoration, we can plan together as state and non-state actors. We want to allow the government to coordinate and develop one whole Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration programme strategy," he said.
