Most Kenyan adults have never been married – Survey

A new survey by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics dubbed  Kenya Time Use Report indicates that 41.1 per cent of Kenyan adults have never been married. 

35 per cent of these are individuals aged between 25-29 years. 

For the ages of 30 to 34 years, 16.2 per cent of them have also never been married. 

Notably, individuals aged between 55 to 59 years constitute 3.4 per cent of those who have never been married, while ages between 35-39 are at 9 percent. 

"Age cohort of between 45-49 years for those who have never been married stand at 4.1 per cent."

For individuals in a polygamous marriage, Kenyans between the ages of 60 to 64 constituted the highest with 7.9 per cent, followed by ages 55 to 59. 

7.7 per cent of those who are in a polygamous marriage are 65 years and above 

50.8 per cent of those who participated in the survey are in a monogamous marriage. 

Further, 2.9 per cent of the population is in polygamous unions, while 2.7 per cent are separated. 

"It is also important to note that 3.3 per cent of teenage women are in monogamous marriages," the report indicated. 

However, according to the report, a higher proportion of teenage men than women were never married. 

A total of 24,000 households were sampled for the 2021 survey, and only 19,522 of the households were found to be eligible for the survey.

There were 40,764 individuals eligible for the time-use survey module from the 16,945 households interviewed. A maximum of two individuals were randomly selected.
