The National Museum of Kenya has announced the closure of the exhibition gallery at Fort Jesus National Monument.

"Exhibition Gallery will be closed for renovations and refurbishment from 23rd October 2023 until further notice," the notice read.

In the notice published in dailies, National Museum said other areas within the Fort will be accessible.

"...other areas within the port shall remain open to the public for normal tours. We apologise for any inconvenience caused," they said.

Fort Jesus remains to be a very famous iconic landmark in Mombasa county.

This tourist destination offers meals, rich history, and a spectacular sea view.

Over the years the Fort has changed hands after being captured by the English, Arabs, and Portuguese. This iconic landmark was also an important trade route on the East African coast.

Today one can tour Fort Jesus for the price of Sh200 for adults and Sh100 for children.

East African residents price Sh600 for adults and Sh400 for children.

With this price, one is able to visit the Fort and also explore the museum that is embedded within the Fort.

The management also allows visitors to take pictures and have a closer look at the history that was existing before.

The non-resident is Sh1200 approximately.

One can take a tour of the place and witness the torture rooms that were used for the slave trade, Canons that were used in war by the Portuguese, and prisons where slaves and personnel were kept.

According to the National Museum, Fort Jesus bears a physical witness in it's structures and subsequent transformations.

The extensive gallery helps the museum to communicate with their public while at the same time providing a safe and meaningful environment for tourists.
