Kiambu police have arrested two suspects in connection with stealing of Kenya Power and Lightning Company transformer and recovered one more stolen earlier.

Kiambu police have arrested two persons suspected of stealing Kenya Power and Lightning Company's transformer.

The police also recovered one stolen transformer.

Kiambu county commissioner Joshua Nkanatha said transformer theft has been rampant where 60 transformers have either been stolen or vandalised.

"The transformers are being stolen during the night when it is heavily raining as residents would assume power has been interrupted due to the heavy downpour," he said.

Kiambu county commander Perminus Kioi said that the recovered transformer was stolen in Riabai village.

Kioi said it was being ferried by a lorried which was pursued by a police officer but fell into a trench where the arrests were made and eight others escaped.

"Police officers are in hot pursuit of those who escaped," he said.

Kioi warned those who were stealing Kenya Power transformers of dire consequences.

He said that they have partnered with KPLC to inform police whenever they have work in any area.

He said in the last financial year Kiambu lost 60 transformers valued at Sh60 million.

He said that the stealing and vandalism have made customers lose confidence in KPLC hence incurring heavy losses.

Those arrested will be arraigned to face charges of economic sabotage.
