Tourism and Wildlife CS Alfred Mutua on Thursday convened a meeting with members of the East Africa Tour Guides and Drivers Association.

Mutua also met Tourism PS John Oltuaa.

The gathering took place at the iconic Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

Mutua said the meeting served as a dual purpose of familiarizing himself with the organization and introducing his vision to them.

"It was enlightening to discover that this association was officially registered in the year 2015 and represents a significant 70 per cent of the workforce (foot soldiers) within the tourism industry," Mutua said.

"Our discussion was highly engaging, touching upon various important topics."

Mutua said the guides expressed their desire to be formally recognized by the government through inclusion in the Tourism Act.

"They conveyed that back in 2015, they had petitioned for this change. I fully supported their request, understanding that such inclusion would provide them with legal standing and ensure their protection," he said.

Mutua said he underscored the importance of professionalism and order, highlighting that these qualities distinguish developed and developing nations. "Upholding world-class standards is paramount in our industry."

He emphasised that it was unanimously agreed that tour guides responsible for escorting tourists across the country should be members of their recognized association.

"This step is essential for enhancing accountability and streamlining the industry."

Mutua said a comprehensive review of the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) of 2014 was necessary to ensure that it aligns with the evolving needs and dynamics of the tourism sector.

On proposal sharing, Mutua said he encourages the association to compile and share their proposals, addressing their concerns and offering feasible solutions.

"This proactive approach would allow me to activate and implement their valuable ideas."

Mutua stressed the importance of members cultivating a sense of order and discipline, maintaining professionalism, and adhering to world-class standards.

"The tour guides expressed their need for ongoing training for their freelancers to enhance their eligibility and efficiency in carrying out their tour duties."

The CS challenged the members to suggest a tourist circuit that offers adventure and entertainment, thereby enriching the overall tourist experience.

"I urged them to collaborate in generating ideas to enhance the visitor's experience, outlining the actions the ministry should take to achieve this goal," Mutua said.

Recognizing the guide's crucial role in promoting tourism, the CS encouraged them to be ambassadors who convince tourists to recommend Kenya to their friends and return for future visits.

Mutua emphasised that success in maintaining Kenya's status as a premier tourist destination would require unity, patriotism, and collective effort.

"Together, we can keep Kenya at the forefront, tirelessly working to regain its position as the leading foreign exchange earner for our nation," he said.

Mutua said the meeting marked the beginning of a collaborative journey to enhance Kenya's tourism industry, with the shared commitment to prioritize excellence and promote the country as an outstanding destination for travelers from around the world.

On their part, the tour guide association gave their plan to revive a scheme to honor and reward the best tour guides for exemplary service.
