There is no school fee increment, Machogu assures parents

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has given assurance to parents that the Ministry is not planning to increase school fees for form One learners joining high school in 2024. 

Machogu spoke in Kikuyu on Monday when he went to over see the beginning of KCPE and KPSEA exams along side President William Ruto. 

He said school fees for secondary schools will remain the same. 

"Also to assure Kenyans there is no school fees increment as learners proceed to Form One," the CS said. 

Machogu noted that currently, national secondary schools and extra county schools charge Sh53,000 per year. While county secondary school learners will continue to pay Sh45,000 per annum.  

"The fees quoted are going to remain as such," Machogu said. 

Further, the CS said there are enough spaces for Form One placements in high schools across the country. 

He said as exams begin, he has received confirmations that the papers have been distributed to all exam centres across the country. 

A total of 1,282,574 Grade 6 learners are sitting the KPSEA exam while some 1,415, 315 candidates are sitting the last KCPE exam. 

The exams will run for three days till Wednesday, November 1. 

National Parents Association Chairman Silas Obuhatsa has also assured parents there is no fee increase. 

Obuhatsa said the government has not held any talks on fee increment. 

"This is media propaganda which we as the National Parents Association are not aware of at all. When schools closed, students were sent home with the fee structure that has been in place before C19. This the Kilemi Mwiria taskforce proposed affordable fees for parents," he said. 

Obuhatsi said the claims that the government has issued new fee structures should be ignored. 

He said Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association Chairman Indimuli Kahi has not asked the government to increase fees come Janury 2024 but has only given a proposal following the hard times in the country that when schools open.

"Should the Ministry find his proposal necessary, then it's the school management boards together with parents that will get the best way forward,"Obuhatsi said.
