Police in Murang’a have launched a manhunt for the main suspect behind the brewing and supply of illicit alcohol in Kahuro Subcounty.

The suspect who the police said is well known is said to be having 19 alcohol joints within one subcounty alone.

This is after 680 litres of ethanol believed to belong to the suspect were impounded in a police raid on Wednesday night.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Murang’a County Commissioner Patrick Mukuri said the ethanol which is estimated to be valued at Sh500,000 was impounded after police received reports from the public about the consignment.

Mukuri further warned those who are still engaging in the brewing of illicit brews in the county that the government will come for them.

“We are continuing with the fight and we would like to issue a strong warning to those who continue to brew the alcohol, we want to tell them they are endangering the lives of our people and as a government, we will not allow this to continue,” Mukuri said.

Murang’a county Police Commander David Mathiu on his part said the police had been looking for the suspect who has continued to put the lives of Kenyans in jeopardy

He said the illicit trade in alcohol had rendered many youth in the area useless as most of them begin to drink in the morning due to the availability of the brews.

“We have been looking for one suspect who is connected to the consignment that was impounded yesterday night. The suspect has put the lives of many Kenyans in jeopardy,” Mathiu said.

“Many youths cannot be able to plan their day because in the morning they are getting cheap alcohol from the joints that he operates and to be very specific he has around 19 joints within one Subcounty; that one can tell you the magnitude of the damage that he is causing to the public,” he added.
