National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who is in Zambia, has interacted with Kenyans living in the southern African nation.

On the sidelines of an engagement with the Zambian National Assembly’s House Business Committee, Wetang’ula met and interacted with Kenyans.

During the meeting, they explored opportunities that Zambia presents, and challenges and brainstormed on possible solutions for existing bottlenecks towards enhancing their well-being abroad.

While recognising that citizens in the diaspora play a vital role in bolstering Kenyans’ economy, Wetang’ula noted that Kenyans are uniquely resilient.

He said Kenyans consistently exhibit capability, experience, and invaluable skills needed in various sectors across the globe.

It is reported that approximately 30 per cent of the IT sector in Zambia benefits from Kenyan technology expertise.

Wetang’ula said the figures are a clear indicator of the potential of Kenyans to make even more impactful contributions.

“It's evident that our diplomatic focus is now predominantly economic rather than ideological. Therefore, we need to enact policies that determine how Kenyans are engaged with and treated while abroad,” said Speaker.

During the address, he emphasised the need to foster unity regardless of political affiliation even when abroad.

He further encouraged Kenyans in Zambia to remain patriotic and true to the words of the Kenyan National Anthem.

“Our ambassadors should function effectively as protectors of our citizens in foreign lands, and the establishment of proper bilateral relations is the key to addressing the issues faced by the diaspora”, he added.

Wetang’ula added that it was important to be treated with respect and dignity in all their endeavours.

“Our collective identity as a nation transcends geographical boundaries, and it is our responsibility to ensure that every Kenyan is respected and cared for,” headed.

Earlier, the House Business Committee of Zambia’s National Assembly hosted Wetang’ula at the Parliament of Zambia.

The high-profile meeting provided a platform for the exchange of ideas regarding parliamentary procedures in the two nations.

Members of the two House Business Committees shared insights into the composition of their respective legislative chambers and the various committees that operate within them.
