Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has urged Kenyans to honour the National Tree Growing Day, on November 13, 2023.
The CS said the public holiday was set for the sake of the well-being of the country's environment and Mother Nature.
"I know being a public holiday, many of us will take advantage of the break to attend to other private and social obligations, and as a call to national duty, I urge all of us to honour the National Tree Growing Day," she said.
"If each of us plant at least two seedlings on Monday, we will instantly hit the campaign target for the day of 100 million seedlings."
Tuya further said the ministry has brought on board the government in the exercise, including National Environment Management Authority county directors and all other stakeholders.
"There are 150 million platable seedlings at Kenya Forestry Research Institute and Kenya Forest Service nurseries across the country. County planting teams will avail these seedlings at designated county planting sites."
The CS further urged Kenyans to document on the 'Jaza Miti Application' app after the exercise to support the 15 billion tree-growing initiative.
The app can be downloaded on Play and App Store, and users to register using their name, email, phone number and the organization they are representing.
The app also provides further information about the tree one has planted and tools for selecting the right tree species for a particular location.
On November 3, the Cabinet agreed to designate a special working day for tree planting in recognition of the effects of climate change and compliance with the 15 billion tree pledge.
"This aligns with the Government's National Tree Planting Campaign under the Presidential Programme for the Accelerated Restoration of Forests and Rangelands," a statement from Cabinet read.
Each Cabinet Secretary has been tasked with adopting at least two counties and providing leadership in the initiative.
They will team up with respective leaders in assigned counties.
