Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come to the defence of Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen following his statement on JKIA's leaking roof.

Speaking at the 30th Institution of Engineers of Kenya Convention and the 18th World Council of Engineers at Pride Inn Beach Resort, Mombasa, the DP said that most Kenyans are allergic to the truth, adding that a number of people have a problem with him for saying the truth.

"I’ve seen some people castigate CS Murkomen because of what he said about JKIA leaking roofs, that is the truth. JKIA was renovated at a massive cost, but today it is a shame, public resources were used but when you go there, you feel sorry," he said.

"People in this country are allergic to truth."

Murkomen while responding to a video that had circulated online showing a roof at one of the terminus at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport faulted retired President Uhuru Kenyatta's regime for doing a shoddy job in maintenance.

He noted that there were other 12 airstrips across the country that were not well maintained.

"When we got to the office, we found out that many of our airports are in a pathetic state and JKIA leaking is a result of that," he said.

Murkomen said the renovation at JKIA in terminal 1C and I1 was sub-standard because it was only meant to serve temporarily.

He made the statement at the Ukunda airstrip in Kwale County.

He said the President's Uhuru government rushed the projects and didn't reach the required standards.

The CS said most airport projects are uncompleted because they were given to unqualified contractors who couldn't deliver but to waste money and taint the reputation of the current government.

Murkomen said the issue of power outage at JKIA is also part of the poor work done by Uhuru's regime.

He, however, said he had spoken to the contractor who was given the JKIA renovation tender to redo the work.

"I directed the contractor on site to install a generator but has been slow arguing that going faster could disrupt the wiring in other areas that had electricity at JKIA," he said.
