Police in Siaya are investigating an incident in which a police officer was killed and another injured while manning the ongoing exams.
The two uniformed officers, together with the Mahero Secondary School Principal, had just been dropped off by bus and left to walk to the school when two thugs emerged from a nearby thicket.
Siaya county commissioner Julius Otieno confirmed the incident saying that investigations are ongoing.
"We are saddened to have lost one of our officers. Another one is injured and has been rushed to the Siaya County Referral Hospital," Otieno confirmed.
The attack happened at around 7:55 am right before the Mahero school's gate.
Two firearms were lost during the fight.
It was not immediately clear what kind of weapons the thugs used.
"The principal was with two police officers. Another was attacked using a knife," he said.
The security officers and the teacher were manning the Geography Paper 1.
Otieno noted that the teacher managed to escape to safety with the examination papers.
"The examination's integrity has not been interfered with and the students are on with their exams," he said.
Due to the surprise attack, a team from KNEC and security talked to the students, the supervisor and the invigilators to calm the situation.
The county commissioner assured residents of security urging them to volunteer and give intelligent information to be able to nub the culprits.
"They came on foot and escaped on foot. They did not emerge from heaven. Kindly give us, investigators, any helpful information to be able to catch the thugs," Otieno said.
Siaya deputy county commissioner Robert Ng'etich said they " won't sleep until when the firearms shall have been recovered and the thugs arrested".
Nyanza regional police commander Manase Musyoka said they are investigating the incident.
Jackim Otieno, a resident stated that the bodies of both the deceased and the survivor had stab wounds.
