Detectives are investigating the murder of a police officer whose body was found in a trench in Athi River, Machakos County.

Officials said the slain officer had gone to a nearby shop from his workstation never to return.

According to police, the 58-year-old officer was last seen leaving his station at around 9 pm on Thursday.

He was due to retire in a year, his colleagues said and described him as a humble and dedicated officer.

His body was found Saturday morning. The cause or motive of the murder is yet to be known, police said.

Other officials said he was targeted in the incident.

Police said the officer was attacked and killed at the scene.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.

This is the latest death to affect police in a series that have been reported.

At least two police officers die weekly at an alarming rate. Last week, a police officer was stabbed to death in Tarasaa, Tana River in a domestic fight.

Another officer died by suicide after jumping into a waterfall in Nyeri. Police say investigations into the incidents are ongoing.

Most of the incidents are linked to trauma out of their work, officials say amid efforts to address the worrying trend.
