Preparations for the 87th National Youth Service (NYS) recruits pass-out parade are in top gear.
President William Ruto is scheduled to preside over the ceremony to be held at the Gilgil Paramilitary Academy in Nakuru on Friday.
On Monday, the recruits who have undergone a six-month intensive training performed a dress rehearsal where they displayed their ‘excellent’ march past and formation skills.
Deputy Director General in charge of the paramilitary training Deputy Director General in charge of paramilitary training Jamlick Chabari congratulated the management, instructors and recruits for the commitment and hard work throughout the period.
They were recruited in May in a nationwide mass exercise.
Last week, Public Service and Delivery Management Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria received a brief ahead of the exercise from the acting Director General James Tembur
“We discussed the NYS commercialization and reengineering programmes which I am happy to note are on course as per the directive from President William Ruto,” he said.
During pass out, Kuria disclosed that various Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with several government institutions that have committed to enlist the NYS services will be signed.
These institutions are drawn from the water, irrigation, and housing sectors.
Others are Huduma Kenya, the Council of Governors, the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), and the Ministry of Labour.
“We also discussed the ongoing Disaster Management Programme due to the El Nino rains. The servicemen and women are playing a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of Kenyans across the country,” he added.
NYS, as per, the recent report by former Chief Justice David Maraga is set to be moved to the Ministry of Interior.
This, the team, argued is for better coordination, given its core functions, and to end the itinerant character that has plagued the Service over the years.
Kuria recently made an inaugural visit to the NYS headquarters in Ruaraka where he unveiled the NYS Reengineering program.
He announced that as part of the Kenya Kwanza government, his priority is to ensure that public servants prioritize their jobs.
Kuria disclosed that 3,000 police recruits will be picked from the service.
The recruitment, the CS said, is part of the partnership between the NYS and the National Police Service.
CS Kuria added that another group of 1,500 officers will be recruited to the Kenya Wildlife Service.
"We have agreed with the Inspector General of Police that the next intake of 3,000 officers will be recruited from NYS. We have also talked with Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) and 1,500 recruits will be from NYS," he stated.
