Man shot dead, 35 houses burnt in inter-clan fighting in Wajir

A 35-year-old man was shot dead and more than 35 houses burnt down in fresh inter-clan fighting in Griftu, Wajir.

Many other residents were displaced in the skirmishes that happened on Thursday, December 7, police said.

Police said at least seven other people were injured in the chaos and treated at local hospitals.

The fighting pitted Jibrair and Iris sub-clans of Degodia clan, officials said.

The two groups used rifles in the fighting that lasted the better part of Thursday and Wednesday night over a piece of land.

They are neighbours.

Police were called to the scene as the fighting raged but could not contain it.

After the guns went silent in Jahahir village, one man identified as Eymo Billow was found dead with gunshot wounds in the legs and back.

35 houses were burnt in the chaos displacing many.

Police who visited the scene said they managed to recover 16 empty cartridges of AK47 rifle and 10 G3 rifle indicating heavy weapons were used.

The body was picked up to the mortuary where an autopsy was conducted. It was later handed over to the family for burial rites.
